01Roofs in Portishead
The houses here, and what their roofs will take.
Portishead has grown in layers, and the roof you have depends on which layer your house came from. The older streets up towards Nore Road and Down Road are largely 1930s semis and detached houses with cut roofs — rafters and purlins, and usable space between them.
The marina and the estates built around it are much newer, and almost all of them are trussed-rafter roofs. Those are designed to be efficient rather than convertible, so the loft is filled with bracing and the conversion means altering that structure properly.
Plots on the newer estates tend to be tighter, so a rear extension is usually about using the full width well, with a steel over a wide opening into the existing house rather than a small door into a separate room.
